3 Questions to Ask Your Commercial Electrician

Oct 03, 2022

Choosing the right commercial electrician is vital to the success of your project. But what questions should you ask a commercial electrician to ensure that they can manage your project effortlessly? Here are three essential questions you should ask before you hire a commercial electrician.

1. Are You Licensed?

You should never hire an electrician that isn't licensed and whose business isn't insured. A licensed electrician has both formal training and on-the-job training. Asking an electrician if they are licensed is the first thing you should do. There are about 730,000 jobs for electricians as of 2021, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. However, not every electrician that will fill those openings has received their license.

A new electrician can work under a supervisor's license. Make sure that you're choosing an electrician that has already gone through the process of being certified through your state's licensing agency.

2. Do You Have Experience With This Type of Project?

It's important that you ask the electrician that you're considering if they have experience with your specific type of project. Many people make the mistake of calling on a residential electrician to manage commercial electrical needs. In most cases, a residential electrician will not have the experience that you need for your commercial project.

An electrician that has had experience with your specific type of project will be able to provide you with references if you ask for them. Checking references is an easy way to ensure that you're choosing the right electrician.

3. How Much Will This Cost?

Estimates will vary, but they should not vary too widely. In other words, if you ask an electrician how much your project will cost, and you ask two other electricians the same question (and you should), then the estimate from all three should be in the same ballpark. While you're asking about pricing, be sure to ask if there's anything additional that you'll need to pay for. For example, if the electrician needs to cut out part of the wall to get to the wiring, then who will be responsible for making that repair? Is that an added cost that you need to be aware of?

Asking the right questions is essential to choosing the right electrician. Ask these questions to find the electrician that is perfect for your project. For more information on this topic, be sure to reach out to Highgate Electric.
